(New South Wales).- Australian two major casino operators have asked the NSW government to delay the planned restriction of cash use on their gaming floors as they struggle financially from the absence of big-spending gamblers.

Star, Crown push NSW government to delay limits on cash use in casinos

Customers at Star Entertainment’s Sydney flagship and Crown Resorts’ Barangaroo casino can gamble up to $5000 in cash every day under New South Wales (NSW) gambling in particular.

Casinos are undergoing significant scrutiny as two of the state’s leading casino operators, Star Entertainment and Crown Resorts, have formally requested the government to reconsider its impending cash usage restrictions on gaming floors. This request comes in light of the ongoing financial challenges faced by both operators, particularly due to a decline in high-roller patronage.

Current Regulations

Under the existing regulations in NSW, patrons at major casinos like Star’s flagship venue in Sydney and Crown’s Barangaroo facility can gamble with cash amounts up to $5,000 daily. This limit has been a significant draw for high-stakes gamblers, contributing to the overall revenue of these establishments.

Upcoming Changes

However, a new policy set to take effect in August aims to reduce this cash limit to $1,000. The government has positioned this change as a measure to promote responsible gambling and curb potential money laundering activities. While the intention behind the policy is commendable, the timing raises concerns for casino operators.

The financial health of both Star Entertainment and Crown Resorts has been adversely affected by the absence of high-spending gamblers. The pandemic has led to a significant decline in international travel, which has historically been a primary source of revenue for these casinos. As a result, both companies are grappling with reduced income and increased operational costs.existing state laws. That figure is meant to fall to a $1000 limit in August.

Request For Delay

In light of these challenges, both operators have approached the NSW government, urging a postponement of the cash limit reduction. They argue that the new restrictions could exacerbate their financial difficulties, potentially leading to job losses and reduced economic contributions to the state.

The casino industry is a vital component of the NSW economy, generating substantial tax revenue and providing thousands of jobs. By limiting cash usage, the government risks undermining the economic stability of these operators, which could have broader implications for the state’s economy.

Moreover, the proposed cash limit could deter high-rollers from visiting these casinos, as many prefer the flexibility of larger cash transactions. This shift could lead to a decline in overall patronage.

Government’s Position

The NSW government has reiterated its commitment to promoting responsible gambling practices. Officials argue that the cash limit reduction is a necessary step to mitigate gambling-related harm and ensure that patrons are not exposed to excessive financial risk.

Despite the operators’ requests, the government has not yet indicated a willingness to delay the implementation of the new cash limits. Ongoing discussions between the casino operators and government officials are expected as both parties seek to find a balance between responsible gambling and the economic realities faced by the industry.
